Home Tips: Painting 101

Welcome to your new website.

Painting is not one of the funnest home improvement projects, but it can be if you prepare for the project correctly. Here is a set of instructions that will help make the project go fast and stay clean. If Your planning to paint your house, have a look at the paint sprayers reviews at depotdad.
Prepare the room you are painting

The first thing you need to do is remove all the switch plate and outlet covers. Put the screws in a plastic bag so you don't lose them. Also, remove any heating registers and return grills. Put them somewhere out of the way.

You should use painter's tape around all of the trim work. Make sure you use the blue or the green colored tape as it tends to stick better than off brands. This will be the most time consuming part of the project.

Move all the furniture on the walls to the center of the room so they are out of the way. Make sure you cover them with plastic or drop cloths.

Cover the entire floor surface with drop cloths or plastic. Plastic is nice because you can simply fold it up and throw it away when you are done.

Painting Time

Now it is time to paint. Make sure you have a good paintbrush and 2 rollers with a stick extension. Stir the paint vigorously to make sure that the paint is properly mixed. Paint the ceiling first. Use an extension pole so you can paint from ground level. A broom handle actually works very well. Just unscrew it from the broom head and screw it into the paint roller. Do not paint in a pattern, in other words, don't paint in rows. You are not mowing the lawn. Your paint will cover better if you do not have a pattern. Just move the roller along the ceiling in an area until it is covered and move onto the next area of the ceiling. Let the ceiling paint dry for about 1-2 hours and apply a second coat.

Now take your paint brush and carefully paint along the ceiling. You don't have to be careful because you will have to paint the walls anyway. You will have to do 2 coats for this also. Wait about 1-2 hours between coats.

You are now ready to paint the walls. Paint the walls in the same manner as the ceiling. Allow 2-4 hours between coats. Paint around the trim with your paint brush. DO NOT PAINT ALONG THE CEILING YET!!!

Let all of the paint dry for about 1-2 more hours. Then apply painter's tape along the edge of the ceiling. This will keep a nice straight line along the ceiling line. Paint along the top of the wall as you would along the trim. Do two coats.

Clean up your paint brushes with water. Do not use hot water as the bristles will come out. Use cold water and hand sift through the brush to get all of the paint out of the brush. Seal the paint up by hammering the lid back on and store in your basement.

After you have done all of this, wait about an hour and you can pull all of the tape off. Ball the tape up and put them in the center of your plastic. Wrap the plastic up, remove it from your house, and through it in the garbage.

Now you can move your furniture back and enjoy your new room.
